ABSTRACT

In this chapter we show that one of the functions of referential shift in Quebec Sign Language (LSQ) is to express a change in point of view on the part of the signer. First, we give a general idea of the notion of point of view as discussed in the literature. We follow with a brief description of referential shift and of its functions in sign languages. Finally, we present data from LSQ showing that the use of referential shift may express a choice of narrative point of view.
