ABSTRACT

It is difficult to look at a young healthy human infant and not wonder what is going on behind those sparkling eyes. Parents, grandparents, and caretakers discourse about how smart their infants are, how sensitive they are to various aspects of the environment, and how much they can do and at such an early age. Scientists interested in the development of sensory systems are inclined to approach the situation more systematically, more quantitatively, and more skeptically. Some questions asked by scientists, philosophers, physicians, and parents about infant vision include, but are not restricted to:

Can infants. see at birth?

How well do infants see?

How sensitive are infants to light?

Can infants see colors?

Can infants see depth in space?

Can infants discriminate between objects?

Can infants see motion?
