ABSTRACT

Based on our experience in developing a symbolic AI computer simulation, we explore how such simulations can be used as a tool in the study of joint human-machine cognitive systems in field settings. We contend that cognitive simulation is best seen as a tool to aid a cycle of empirically based model development and model-based empirical investigations of joint cognitive systems. The chapter is organized around a series of principles or claims about simulations of cognition as related to complex human-machine systems.
