ABSTRACT

Divorce is an event that changes the lives of many parents’ children around the world. The prevalence of divorce in Western industrialized societies has accompanied social concern for the future well-being of these children. Divorce is certainly an event that requires active psychological adaptation on behalf of all family members involved, adults and children alike. Yet, common expectations that divorce has negative impact on the development of children may prevent us from considering how parental divorce may indeed benefit some children. Whether the impact of divorce on psychological well-being is detrimental or beneficial, all participants in divorce must adjust to losses and novelties in family relationships as those relationships undergo radical changes.
