ABSTRACT
Because easy questions are usually answered before difficult ones, it is a cruel irony of intellectual progress that each new generation of researchers faces a dwindling supply of the former and a constant supply of the rest. I was reminded of the irony in thinking about the topic of this volume, for there are probably no questions more difficult to answer than those associated with describing and explaining the patterns of relations among people and their environments and how these patterns change in time.
