ABSTRACT

The term organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) is of uncertain lineage. I cannot say for sure whether it was my invention or was suggested by Tom Bateman or Ann Smith when one or the other was a doctoral student at Indiana University. But the purpose of the term, that is, its referent, was never in doubt. It was seized upon to denote a class of job behaviors that are separate from in-role productivity but were presumed to be affected by a participant’s job satisfaction.
