ABSTRACT

“One of the most troublesome things about current stage theories is their proliferation,” Jane Loevinger (1987b) remarked. Going on to discuss stage theories of moral development and ego development, among others, she concluded that “if the stages really reflect a common ‘deep structure,’ the stages of those variables should all proceed in tandem.” She then asked, “If they are not all evidence of the same structure, how many structures are there, and what should be the relations among them? Those are among the questions remaining to be answered in this field of research” (p. 242). In this chapter, I apply Loevinger’s questions to the relationship of ego and moral development.
