A principal focus of study remains tracing the origins and causes of individual variations within personality functioning.… it is important to build on current research—investigating mechanisms that link developmental processes (e.g., cognition and affect) and provide continuity in development—How do affective regulatory styles and representational processes mediate behavior? How do defensive processes develop?
