ABSTRACT

This chapter relates the work of the authors in this volume to the field of second language learning generally. Six generalizations are drawn from the second language literature and are evaluated in the light of the research in this volume. I argue that this volume enriches the field of second language research by providing new approaches and new research paradigms. In particular, the work on vocabulary acquisition and development represents a significant contribution to an area where there is a relative paucity of research. Finally, implications for pedagogy are drawn from the work in this volume.
