ABSTRACT

Ohio is one of the more urban of the fifty states. It has fourteen metropolitan areas or parts of metropolitan areas—home to 8,660,000 people. This is 81.4 percent of the population of the state. Ohio ranks seventh in terms of the sheer number of people living in urban areas and eighteenth in terms of the percentage of people living in urban areas. This study covers seven of these metropolitan areas—those with central cities having been identified as having edge cities. They are Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Toledo, and Youngstown.
