ABSTRACT
To fully comprehend a text, we need to do much more than just understanding the individual words and sentences. In order to adequately understand a text, the skilled reader has to derive a mental representation of the state of affairs that the text describes: an integrated mental model of the whole (Johnson-Laird, 1983). To derive such a model, the reader will need to engage in a number of processes, and here I consider the main ones.
