ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to show the importance of some recent developments of mental model theory (henceforth MMT) for the study of decision-making processes. MMT was originally developed by Phil Johnson-Laird (see Johnson-Laird, 1983) and later by Johnson-Laird and Byrne (1991) mainly to account for deductive inferences. However, in contrast with other theories of reasoning, MMT can be extended in such a way as to explain various domains of human thinking, including judgement and choice.
