ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a treatment program derived from experience with 26 adult women seen clinically who had experienced incest as children. Twenty-five met diagnostic criteria for delayed or chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as operationally defined in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DSM-III (APA, 1980). Horowitz’s concept of stress response syndrome (SRS) enhanced their individual and group psychotherapy. A questionnaire designed and administered to register SRS components experienced introspectively served usefully as a self-assessment tool early in therapy. Group therapy proved useful in later or consolidation phases.
