ABSTRACT

Adolescence is a stage in which the peer group exerts high, if not maximum, influence on an individual. Often, adolescent peer groups exert negative influence resulting in a variety of destructive behaviors. A vital task of the inpatient staff is not only to channel group influence in a constructive manner, but also to curtail negative-destructive acting out. Methods employed to accomplish this include various verbal interventions, such as group psychotherapy, community meetings, and identity groups, to name but a few. Physical group activities, including therapeutic camping and recreational and occupational activities have also proven to be extremely beneficial in promoting a more cohesive community. The scope of this chapter is to cover group psychotherapy and to some extent community meetings. Various other group activities will be covered in other sections of this book.
