ABSTRACT

Inhibited sexual desire (ISD) has become one of the most common presenting problems for which couples seek treatment. The author has found useful the typology suggested by Kaplan (1979) for categorizing this sexual dysfunction. People who have never experienced sexual desire are said to have primary ISD. Individuals with secondary ISD are those who have experienced desire at some point, but presently have no desire or diminished desire. Individuals with global ISD are those who lack desire in all situations and with all partners. Individuals who experience inhibited desire in some situations, or with a specific partner, are said to have situational ISD.
