ABSTRACT

In the current Zeitgeist, it is assumed that behaviorism does not have anything useful to say about emotion. Although clinicians may adopt “behavioral” techniques, they frequently reject the behavioral philosophy from which the techniques were derived, primarily because complex behavior such as emotion seems beyond the scope of behaviorism. However, as we hope to make clear in this chapter, behaviorists are interested in the study of emotion. In fact, the role of emotion is one of our prime interests as we study the process of change in couple therapy.
