ABSTRACT

An Ericksonian perspective, appreciating individuals' capacities and resources within their life-developmental space, will help therapists meet the managed health care challenge of providing satisfying and effective treatments. Commonalities between the essential characteristics of therapy in managed care settings and the defining features of an Ericksonian approach are highlighted, as are several potential difficulties in implementing strategic (and other brief) treatments. It is recommended that therapists working in Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and other managed care arrangements become more familiar with Ericksonian approaches, and that Ericksonian-oriented therapists participate more in professional opportunities within the rapidly expanding managed care field.
