ABSTRACT
By far the greatest number of treatment referrals for children under 12 come as a result of behavioral disturbances. Unlike the internalizing disorders, the externalizing disorders cannot be treated without a high degree of parental cooperation. When a high level of parental dysfunction is directly linked to externalizing disorder in the child, these conditions often cannot be treated in an office-based setting at all (zone 2 or 4).
