ABSTRACT

The group model described herein entails a relatively short-term treatment approach. In beginning to address treatment issues for adults abused as children, it is important to first establish the magnitude of the problem. Unfortunately, while many clinicians are keenly aware that the childhood abuse is widespread, a variety of issues impede attempts to accurately assess prevalence. Adjunct staff on inpatient units and members of a treatment team will appreciate, however, if attempts are made to inform them that a given member may, for example, have had a hard time in group. The treatment model outlined can be adjusted to accommodate various short-term time frames through expansion or reduction of time devoted to the various treatment modules. In an attempt to consolidate learning and generalize to the world outside of group, members identify issues requiring further exploration, anticipate potential challenges and obstacles, and discuss plans for follow-up treatment.
