ABSTRACT

In a moment of truth Alberto Giacometti broke with the program of the Surrealist group, when he announced that he felt it necessary to work from life. André Breton cajoled and debated, for Giacometti was too valuable a talent to lose. But the sculptor’s mind was made up. Breton cursed his defection by arranging for Giacometti’s ostracism by members of the Surrealist movement.
