ABSTRACT

Adolescence is a time of unprecedented physical and psychological transformation. In contrast to earlier changes in life, in adolescence, one is expected to negotiate new developmental challenges in a relatively independent fashion. Of course, adolescents will often share perceptions of maturational change with their mothers, a phenomenon especially common among teenage girls. Nonetheless, “fitting in” with and gaining the acceptance of peers, as opposed to winning the approval of the parent, assume priority during these pivotal years of advance.
