ABSTRACT

In the last few years, much research activity has been focused on the determinants of self-control (e.g., Hartig & Kanfer, 1973; Kanfer & Zich, 1974; Meichenbaum, 1972; Thoresen & Mahoney, 1974). Much of the work on this subject has been guided by a self-control model (e.g., Kanfer, 1971) based on an elaboration of Skinner's (1953) ideas that emphasize increasing the salience of the reinforcing long-term consequences of nontransgression or of the aversive consequences of transgression (e.g., Hartig & Kanfer, 1973; Kanfer & Zich, 1974).
