ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses upon eye movement abnormalities in progressive neurological diseases. Also emphasized is the relationship between eye movement impairments and the cognitive deficits which often accompany these diseases. For the neurologist, oculomotor abnormalities can be clues to the localization of pathology. For the clinician interested in progressive neurological diseases, the study of eye movements can provide valuable information for assessing the status, severity, and progression of disease processes. The rate and pattern of disease progression, as measured by eye movement abnormalities, offer important information for the clinical management of symptoms. The study of eye movements in progressive neurological diseases improves diagnostic reliability and clinical management. A greater understanding of the underlying pathology will lead to further insights into the nature of normal oculomotor functioning. A given oculomotor symptom is often common to several neurological disorders. For the sake of clarity, therefore, this chapter has been organized around neurological disease entities rather than oculomotor symptoms.
