ABSTRACT

Authors of previous chapters in this volume provide comprehensive discussions of the role of developmental, familial, and individual factors in the etiology of bulimia nervosa. Throughout these discussions, there is an appreciation for the heterogeneous nature of bulimia nervosa, and the challenge this complexity poses for researchers investigating the etiology of this disorder. Although significant progress has been made in our understanding of bulimia nervosa, it is clear that many important questions, including those generated by previous research, remain unanswered. Of great concern to the authors of this volume and other participants at the 1990 Kent Psychology Forum is the meaningful integration of research findings to date and the delineation of pertinent issues that should be addressed in the future. The final section of this volume provides recommendations for accomplishing these goals.
