ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a description of a counseling intervention for treating families with attachment issues within two subsystems—the parent–child and the marital. A case study is presented in which a mother and her two-year-old son both presented with characteristics consistent with attachment-related concerns. Individual thematic play therapy, which is a form of play therapy currently used with young children who display symptoms of insecure attachment, was used with the male child. Conjoint couple therapy was used with the parents. In spite of the child’s young age, positive results in the family system were achieved within ten sessions through these combined therapeutic approaches. To preserve anonymity, fictitious names are used in the case example.
