ABSTRACT

Unanticipated in the moverment toward the community care of people with psychiatric illnesses were the many roles that families would play in caregiving and service delivery. The development of these roles, however, has rarely been a matter of concerted discussion and planning in either the family movement or the service delivery system across the country. Rather, various forms of involvement have happened as groups of families sought inclusion and interested providers have tried to respond to these demands and/or the needs of the system for utilizing families.
