ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the major areas of research into the psychology of burglary. It considers the impact of being burgled then goes on to review the legal and psychological definitions. The prevalence of burglary will be presented and the demographics of burglars will be briefly explored. This will be followed by a discussion as to why people commit burglary and, when they do, how they choose their targets, including the spatial behaviour of burglary offenders. The next section will cover the attempts at classifying burglars based on their offence behaviour.
