So what might make a suspect confess? Research has identified three broad reasons (Gudjonsson, 1992):
1. The suspect perceives the evidence against them to be very strong, and sees denial as futile.
2. The suspect is sorry for their crime and wants to explain what happened. 3. The subject is reacting to pressure, for example from the police or the stress
of confinement.
