ABSTRACT

Some of the most consistent findings suggest that the counselor's use of accurate empathy is directly related to the positive growth of the client. C. R. Rogers probably comes closest to an ideal description of what empathy means in counseling. Accurate empathy has been difficult to measure with any degree of reliability. In another very comprehensive study of empathy, it was decided that the most clear-cut way of measuring empathy was by some kind of situational test; namely, objective observation of client and counselor interaction. The interpretation of the data in support of the first hypothesis, a highly positive relationship between the practice of zazen and the development of empathy or affective sensitivity is a limited one. Zazen means sitting Zen meditation. Essentially zazen is the conscious attempt to loosen oneself from all the thoughts one has about oneself in the past and in the future.
