ABSTRACT

The conjunction of neuroscientific investigation and meditation generally has been in the area of the neural correlates of meditation. The levels of neuroscience at which structure can be studied through meditation are the higher levels of nervous system functioning. It is precisely at the level of these higher systems that neuroscience falters, due to the enormous complexity. At the level of neurons and on down, a series of brilliant achievements have been accomplished by neuroscientists ; but next to nothing is known of the system properties of even such well-defined subsystems as the various sensory cortices. Of course, meditation can tell nothing about the embodiment of those events whose varying degrees of functional interrelatedness comprise the system. Obviously, meditation can tell nothing about neurotransmitters or neurons as such. The profound inter Connectivity of the "holistic brain" reiterates the interconnectivity of the cosmic whole.
