ABSTRACT

As On Living through Soviet Russia has taken shape, we have become increasingly aware that we are exploring an immense theme which would take many volumes to cover. Extremely rich possibilities still remain for further research using life stories and oral history. These encompass, for example, future studies of the nomenklatura and of the Soviet industrial elites; of kulak families; and of ethnic minorities, including the Jews. 1 We have examined urban childhood here, but rural childhoods could equally be investigated, or youth or old age in city or countryside. We could look at the survival of religious practices among the Orthodox majority, as well as minorities such as the Old Believers here.
