In a small Siberian town, the teachers went on strike for the first time in the spring of 1997. The reason was not, for instance, that their wages had not been paid during the last months – indeed, it had no direct connection to Russia's economic or social problems. The teachers participated in the nationwide protests against the first program of school sex education. ¹
