ABSTRACT

The higher education community has, especially over the last decades, been extending its academic reach into new communities in search of learners–additional learners to the traditional student. Higher education has reached into local communities where access has historically been restricted. The shape of future higher education remains as cloudy as the vision of the future. Networking on a variety of levels, from campus to global, will and should remain essential. The United States and others must train people to both think and act, both locally and globally. Higher education in Hawaii especially must help to keep the students' local feelings and values while preparing them to more reach out to and understand the larger Pacific region and the rest of the world. Faculty would be both responsible and informed citizens who would govern institutions of learning. Higher education leaders must address a twofold challenge: continue the pursuit of basic research, while also assisting society with meeting its basic workforce needs.
