ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the new technological environment has made learning to seek out information more possible than ever before. It takes up, first, the technophile's predictions of the end of university. The chapter outlines some of the global megatrends that characterize higher education today. Phoenix University is the biggest institution of higher education in the United States. As the nation's largest accredited university, University of Phoenix has helped thousands of working professionals achieve their educational goals without disrupting their personal or professional lives. It has become fashionable among pundits to declare the end of nearly everything—from ideology. Some years ago an essay in Science suggested the end of the university. The universities of the futures will be a combination of local nodes and global networks. They will hopefully combine the best features of face-to-face education and distance learning.
