ABSTRACT
What effect does punishment have on the punished? The best answer to this question is “it depends.” Sometimes punishment causes less future crime by the punished. Sometimes it causes more. Sometimes punishment makes no difference. That much is well-established (Sherman, 1993). But why these effects vary so greatly across similar tests with different samples remains largely unknown. Even when or with whom these different effects will occur remains largely unpredictable.
