ABSTRACT

A reservoir called Kurk Geuz (Forty Eyes) supplied the entire valley by a system of tile pipes. One of the oldest cities in Asia Minor, Marash is first recorded in history around the twelfth century BC as Marqasi, capital of the Hittite kingdom of Gurgun. Marash is situated at the foot of the Akhorisu Mountains, a part of the Taurus chain. It enjoys a varied climate and fertile soil. Armenian schools had been established centuries ago throughout Armenia in connection with the churches. A number of institutions of higher learning had been maintained in cities and monasteries. Turkish persecutions since the Middle Ages, especially of the cultured citizens, had greatly handicapped educational activities among Armenians. The missionaries established high schools and colleges in predominantly Armenian towns, and a university at Beirut. Armenian elementary and secondary schools were maintained by the churches.
