ABSTRACT

During the trial Ismael Bey once more questioned us thoroughly, and we gave our answers. He gave his verdict as follows: “Although these persons have committed no obvious crime against the government or the Fatherland, nevertheless since the photograph of the bones which they have depicted gives room for suspicion, I sentence them to eighteen months in prison.” He asked the clerk, “Tell me, how many more months do they have to stay to complete their sentence?” The clerk reported, “Your Honor, they have already stayed three months longer than the required term.” Said the judge, “In that case, they must be released from prison and returned to Urfa under guard, where they must remain under probation restricted within the city limits, to await the final decree from Mustafa Kemal Pasha.”
