ABSTRACT

There are various myths and popular ideas but few empirical studies of gender differences in the tendency to form new heterosexual partnerships following widowhood in later life. Little is known about new partnerships actually developed by older widows and widowers. The few studies of remarriage in later life (see Bengtson et al., 1990) and one study of dating relationships of older single people (Bulcroft and Bulcroft, 1985) offer some information on new partnerships among the widowed.
