ABSTRACT

In recent years it has been incredibly difficult to give a clear definition and categorization of hysteria. As reported in psychiatric literature, even from a purely descriptive point of view, the term is regarded as obsolete and considered by many to belong to the history of psychiatry. A similar process has taken place in the psychoanalytic field. However, in many analytic situations so-called hysterical traits can be commonly observed. For social and cultural reasons, the hysterical symptom has no doubt lost the "Viennese enamel" of the last century, but the hysterical character is not so rare.
