ABSTRACT

I shall examine three dominant images in contemporary Puerto Rican literature and offer some personal comments—the comments of an “outsider” who yet prides himself on having more than a trace of the proverbial mancha del plátano in his upbringing and literary sympathies—on each of them. In particular, I wish to comment on the degree to which these images help us to understand current Puerto Rican reality. But before I begin I should like to put in a good word for “images” in general.
