ABSTRACT

If we detach ourselves from the psychological pursuit of reliable and valid measurements to look with awe and puzzlement upon what has and has not been attempted in the study of humour, we see the problems related to the understanding of positive psychological concepts in bold relief. Why are we preoccupied with symptomatic-pathological entities and easily quantified external events instead of greatly-needed joy, happiness, creativity, courage and humour? Following the Charcot-Freud model of man, proper and reputable science still clings to its faith in man as homo pathologicus. To do otherwise and have faith in joy and happiness would initiate a mind-boggling adventure. Man henceforth would be squarely on his own small wobbly feet, getting by with the help of his friends. All facets and disciplines of man would be in for a similar shock.
