ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book aims to investigate the question of faculty productivity at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU); and, in the case of Price, the role of outside funding from the National Science Foundation. It deals with student achievement at HBCUs. The book examines the media coverage that Morris Brown College received about its accreditation and financial woes and discusses media coverage of HBCUs more generally. It looks at student achievement at HBCUs relative to that of Black students elsewhere. The competition that HBCUs face to attract and educate African-American and other students presents both challenges and opportunities. Despite the fact that numerous studies have found that HBCUs are more effective at retaining and graduating African-American students than predominately white colleges, HBCUs have their detractors.
