ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author shares thoughts on the expanding agenda that have emerged as a result of his peace research agenda that has focused on the UN system and the world relations of local communities. It discusses "what can be learned from young people's own views of 'youth' and 'peacebuilding,'" giving special attention to the views of young Palestinians interviewed in 1999. The chapter focuses on the protracted period of conflict in six counties that make up Northern Ireland. The author then provides an extensive discussion of three factors that provide junctures between peace and the environment. He challenges those attempting to end violent conflicts to think carefully about the exact nature of the walls between conflicting parties. The chapter concludes by asserting the need for "awareness of the multiple identities, motivations, spaces, images, and roles of youth in global and local contexts.
