ABSTRACT

The telling of parables has a long history in theology and ethics. Parables illustrate a specific circumstance to which the listener can often relate but may also permit the identification of general principles that can be applied to other situations. So, with apologies to Charles Dickens, I would like to tell you three parables about genetic counseling past, genetic counseling present, and genetic counseling yet to come. The examples I will present are based on my experience with providing genetic counseling for the deaf and for the parents of the deaf.
