ABSTRACT
In this essay the author views the personal and societal functions of friendship as less than uniformly positive and shared importantly with a less intimate social relationship, the friendly relation. The characteristics of these two types are distinguished, and the initiation, development, and change of each are described. The character of interaction within friendships and friendly relations is expounded, with special reference to ambivalence, conflict, and the role of third parties.
