ABSTRACT
I have evolved an explanatory framework for analyzing the moral career of the drugtaker. It is useful here, however, to examine a concrete instance in order to illustrate in detail the type of factors involved. I wish therefore to take as my example the position of the marihuana smoker in Notting Hill, an area of West London commonly frequented by the middle-class bohemian young. First, the area itself is remarkable in that it has a population that contains a large overrepresenta-tion of young people and immigrants:
