ABSTRACT

One of the ways in which culture affects people’s behavior is by providing normative expectations of what people of that culture should or should not do and desire. These expectations vary in both their strength and their origin, ranging from outright prohibitions to permissions to encouragements to obligations. The source of these expectations may lie in the norms and values of one’s culture, but it may also, and often do, lie in the expectations of others—members of one’s cultural group.
