ABSTRACT
During the Cold War, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization provided Turkey its national security guarantee. Turkey in turn contributed to the policy of credible deterrence by its pivotal status in NATO’s southeastern flank. 1 Turkey’s relationship with the European Union basically evolved on the basis of the Ankara Agreement of 1963, specifying that this relationship would result in an eventual membership that would anchor Turkey to the West not only in terms of economics, politics and identity aspects, but also with respect to security.
