ABSTRACT

According to Argyris and Schön (1996), learning is said to be the detection and correction of errors. Taken in the context of an organization, Argyris and Schön describe two types of organizational learning: singleloop and double-loop learning. Single-loop learning occur when problems and issues are resolved, or improvements made, without altering the underlying assumptions and beliefs. The existing paradigm or cognitive framework still acts to filter information accordingly. Double-loop learning, on the other hand, seeks to alter the existing cognitive framework by questioning and altering the current beliefs and assumptions. With the increasing complexities of the external environment, the capability of the organization to learn how to learn, especially when it comes to doubleloop learning, becomes crucial. This study aims to synthesize the scattered literature on learning constraints, and to suggest ways of overcoming them in order to improve organizational learning practices.
