ABSTRACT

The Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias (FAR) began with the civilian, middle-class-origin guerrillas who participated in the armed struggle against General Fulgencio Batista. The structure of Cuba's FAR ties into the country's defense strategy. The professional officers are recruited from the Union de Jovenes Comunistas-led Union of Cuban pioneers, a new concept enveloping the embryo of Fidel Castro's new "army of cadres." The right arm of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba is the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), one of the country's most complex and awesome revolutionary institutions. Approximately half of the troops are regular FAR soldiers and the other half MININT's cadres. General Batyn Dorzh, minister of defense of the People's Republic of Mongolia, pointed out, after touring Cuba's military establishment, that one of the most important achievements of the Cuban Revolution was the development and consolidation of the Revolutionary Armed Forces." Legendary figures from the revolutionary war such as Che Guevara, Raul Castro, Faustino Perez and Raul Menendez Tomasevich.
